Perhaps the best-known American city, New York City is truly a city that never sleeps—there are plenty of things to see and experience round the clock in the Big Apple. However, New York City is not among the first destinations that pop up in parents’ minds—especially those who have been to New York City before and found it too exhausting.

But there are still places where you can bring the children for a memorable (and not stressful) holiday, including the ones in this list.

Shopping for kids

FAO Schwarz

Younger children are often not very impressed with the shopping choices in New York City—especially those places that only fashion-conscious and fashion-savvy shoppers can appreciate. But if you want to take your children to a shopping trip in the Big Apple, do take them to FAO Schwarz (pictured right), the oldest toy store (and certified child wonderland) in the United States. Aside from the wide selection of the best and coolest toys and games in the world, FAO Schwarz also features a floor piano and larger than life toy soldiers.

There are also different feature shops in FAO Schwarz, including the Muppet Whatnot Workshop, Style by Me Barbie, The Middleton Doll Newborn Nursery, and the Madame Alexander Doll Factory. When the kids get hungry, there is the FAO Café and FAO Schweetz.

Exploring the museums

New York City is home to many museums that the children will definitely enjoy. One of these museums is the American Museum of Natural History, which was prominently featured in the film A Night at the Museum. The children will have a great time exploring the numerous exhibits, including the Hayden Planetarium, dinosaur skeletons, dioramas, and gem and meteorite samples.

Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum is also a great destination—one of the first children’s museums in the world, your children will have the time of their lives playing and discovering new things through the museum’s exhibits, which cover a lot of interesting subjects such as cooking and the ecosystems of the world.

Children who are into spaceships, airplanes, and boats will definitely enjoy the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum (pictured right), which showcases actual vehicles used in various points of history that allowed man to travel and discover. Other must-see museums include the New York City Fire Museum, the New York Hall of Science, the Children’s Museum in Manhattan, the Museum of the Moving Image, and the Sony Wonder Technology Lab.

Iconic city sights

New York City is through and through an urban destination, but there are plenty of sights to see in the Big Apple. Of course, no New York visit is complete without going to the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Center—two iconic skyscrapers that allow you to view the city from above on their rooftops. Times Square can be a bit daunting for younger children—but older children will definitely enjoy a few hours in this world-renowned square with its Toys R Us and M&M’s Store. Ellis Island and Staten Island are also great places to see the Statue of Liberty after a short ferry ride.
